Breast Reduction Surgery (reduction mammoplasty) is a common surgical procedure performed to reduce the size of over generous, large, heavy breasts. Many women with big breasts often suffer discomfort and pain, shoulder and backaches. Large breasts can cause irritation of the skin between and beneath the breasts resulting in a disturbed sleep. Some women are faced with embarrassment from saggy breasts and some find it difficult to shop for the right clothes and underwear, which can be rather expensive.
This operation can bring enormous relief to women through the physical, medical and emotional benefits. The surgery aims to make the breasts smaller, shapelier and better supported.
During your consultation the surgeon will examine you and discuss the achievable reduction in size. The surgery usually requires the removal of excess fat and skin, the breast is reshaped, the nipple is relocated much higher on the breast to match the new contours. Breast Reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires 1 night stay in the hospital. The scarring around the nipple and the crease of the breast will gradually soften. However, they will be permanent. You will be required to wear a surgical bra for 4 to 6 weeks.
Soon after surgery, you might experience pain, discomfort, swelling and discoloration for the first few weeks, which should settle down. Movement will be restricted for the first 2 weeks. Pain killers and anti-inflammatory medication will be provided. The sutures are removed after 7-10 days. Your post-operative care instructions will be provided at the time of your consultation.
For Several months, there may be numbness in the skin on the breast and the nipples. Women with large breasts tend to have little nipple sensitivity. After the operation, the sensation is greatly reduced but it will return very gradually. Breast feeding is usually possible after a reduction, but it is common to have reduction of the milk production, because of the damage to milk ducts and glands. There may also be slight irregularities in the size and shape of the breasts and position of the nipples. However, these differences tend to be very minor and rarely need adjustment.
